Getting Ready for Loscon
Kris and I used to have a dealer’s table, both of us were in the art show and working the blood drive. And once at Phil and Ed’s Excellent Convention I also did camerawork at the masquerade. Now, without the dealer table and only Kris in the art show and the blood drive, getting ready seems rather easy. Sometimes Kris and I look at each other and ask, “Are we forgetting something?”
We always have buttons at the blood drive for the donors, nurses and volunteers. So, I have to check we have enough button parts.
We bought enough parts for 100 buttons last year and we still have enough for this year. Back when we were doing eight to ten dealer’s tables a year, we would buy 2,000 at a time. They were our best seller, and at a dollar each, they would often pay for the table.
It has become a tradition to give balloon fish at the blood drive. I use to give out big heart-shaped balloons to the donors. Then one year my supply of heart-shapes didn’t arrive in time. I had just learned to make balloon fish, so I made some of those. After that, everyone wanted balloon fish – including the nurses.
Checking my supplies, looks like I might not have enough 260s (2” x 60” balloons).
That seems to be the only supply I need. We also have the tradition of home-made cookies. We started this because back when we started doing the blood drives with the U.S.S. Alliance, the Red Cross had cookies that were no so great. Now the have Chips Ahoy, the Keebler line and some really good trail mix, but we have kept the tradition.
Starting last year, our newest endeavor is setting up the Ice Cream Social on Friday. We picked up most of the toppings tonight at Smart & Final.
Next week, I’ll be putting together the raffle tickets and the buttons for the blood drive.
