Habaneros:  The Next Generation

Habaneros:  The Next Generation

Hot sauces made with habaneros are my favorite kind of hot sauces, like Cayucos Hot Sauce  https://cayucoshotsauce.com/ , Humboldt Hot sauce (Habanero-Mango) https://humboldthotsauce.com/ , and most recently, Red Beards Habanero & Carolina Reaper https://getredbeards.com/ .

So, after enjoying habaneros in several recipes, I decided to grow my own.  That was about two or three years ago and those two plants, Richard and Nicole, gave us a great harvest.

They have since gone to the great garden in the sky, so it was time to plant the next generation.  Using a trick I found on the internet (cause if it’s on the internet, it has to be true) I placed seven seeds in a wet paper towel, sealed it, and tapped it to our sliding glass door.  Within a week, four of them sprouted.  I planted those four in a pot.  By the way, they had surprisingly long roots.  As you can see, three of them made it.

They’ve been in their pots for about two weeks.  If you look closely, two of them have just gotten a second set of leaves.

But I also gave the three sleepers a second chance, and in dirt, two of them finally sprouted.  One of them is a real bean pole.

In one year, we go almost a hundred habaneros from Richard alone, so we’re looking forward to a big harvest early next year.  We can’t use them all up, but we’ll give them to friends and you can chop them up and freeze them for later.

WARNING:  when you do chop them up, wear gloves or you’ll be sorry.

We’ve been finding these little bugs hanging around our apartment complex lately. They are called Banded Alder Borers.  They live all up and down the west coast, but I’ve never seen them before.  Turns out they are attracted to fresh paint and our complex has recently been painted.
