It’s Coming
It’s hard to believe Loscon 50 is less than four weeks away. This afternoon we had the last committee meeting before the convention. I attended virtually, saving me a trip down to the LAX Hilton and $20.00 in parking – that’s the validated rate. The regular rate would have been $53.00.
Just to be clear, if you attend the convention, you will get the validated rate.
Kris and I are in charge of two departments: Ice Cream Social and the Blood Drive.
New hotel, new rules. They won’t let us bring in outside ice cream, so we can’t have tubs of ice cream and all the toppings. So, we’re having ice cream bars that the hotel will provide and hand out. Essentially, Kris and I are out of a job. But that’s okay, our main interest (has been for the past 35 years), is the blood drive.
Our hotel liaison, Christian McGuire, will be working with the hotel to bring back the Ice Cream Social the way we had it at the LAX Marriot. Just being handed an ice cream bar just doesn’t have the same social feel as getting you scoop of ice cream and going over to the topping table and hanging out with other fans. You can chat as long as you want and not worry if you ice cream is melting in the bowl.
And speaking of the hotel. According to Christian, they acted as if they had never heard of the American Red Cross. Maybe they have never had a blood drive, I don’t know. But they were concerned with things that the LAX Marriot never asked about, like the length of the blood drive truck and if we were bringing food in – they have a policy about no outside food in the meeting rooms. But we need water and snacks at the cantina for people after their donation. At least that has been worked out.
These are all behind-the-scenes logistics. The attendees are going to have a great time as always. These are some of the highlights that were discussed: Writing Guest of Honor Larry Niven. The Droid Builders will be in the Makers’ Room. Filking will include the history of filks. The Toy Drive will have a life-size Krampus. The Art Show will have a display of costumes. And there will be a memorial wall of those in fandom we have lost in this past year.
You can find the full schedule here: https://loscon.lineupr.com/loscon-50/schedule
And you can still preregister before November 20th: https://loscon.org/
Hope to see you at the con – and at the Blood Drive.

“I believe I’m three weeks behind in reviewing these recipes Dennis tried. First, “Sweet and Sour Meatballs” https://recipecs.com/sweet-and-sour-meatballs-recipe/?fbclid=IwY2xjawE3Y7NleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTIaqc7ZJB-t6yQhEvyY9BgYNzoCmYmxg3LPrzq9zjLfDGOxuE4NCpRXdQ_aem_bGhgTgCfKZmafzNoRMelMA
and “Korean Corn” https://longbakethequeen.com/korean-corn-cheese/?fbclid=IwY2xjawGVFkZleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHRUKRcKeTqpNhfhfNUX5nk4kguZ43cn7j3ozYQ6B4dLZPuqeR5Ly3Gz47A_aem_J0Jc2UyNE3kw3kYF1QcgFg
The Sweet and Sour Meatballs came out excellent. The only thing I would change is to double the sauce. This seems to be true for a lot of the recipes Dennis tries, starting way back with his Hot and Spicy Turkey Meatballs that he got from Kris before they were married. Doubling the sauce with anything over rice just seems to be good idea.
The Korean Corn… well… not so much. Not that it was bad, it just wasn’t anything special. It was like corn with butter and salt. The mayonnaise didn’t really add anything to it. And you can always add green onions to almost any dish. Not a keeper.” — Vincent Reinhart.
