What a Week He’s Having

I took Thursday and Friday off work this week.  A lot of my fellow coworkers told me to enjoy my days off.

Yeaaaaahhh…

Thursday was car repair day.  I needed to get some work done to pass a smog check.  Turns out I also needed a brake job, new tires, and my OBD port doesn’t work.  Without the OBD port, I can’t get a smog check.  But all that is just an inconvenience compared to what a friend of ours went through.

Kris’s home care client is a long-time friend of ours had a couple of heart attacks and a couple of stints put in over the course of his life, but that was now not enough.  On Friday morning, Kris and I got up at 2:00 am to take him to the Ronald Regan Medical Center at UCLA at 5:00 am.  Three hours later, he was in surgery for a triple bypass. They ended up doing a quadruple bypass, repairing a hole in his heart and fixing an irregular rhythm.

I am glad to say he is doing well.  In fact, they had him up and walking the next day.  I didn’t even expect he’d be conscious the next day.  I guess medical science has advanced a lot since my mom had a triple bypass over twenty years ago.  He’s got a long road to a full recovery ahead of him, but he’s off to a good start.

Being that he is a friend, this took a toll on Kris and I as well.  We worry about him, especially Kris since she works with him five days a week.  They told us that the surgery would be six hours long, so as soon as they took him in, we went home and crashed.  Sleep is our way of dealing with stress.  We just want to turn our brains off for a while.

The hospital was very good at texting us updates on the progress of his surgery – and it was always positive.  This was new to me.  Every other time I knew someone in surgery, you had to wait until it was over and the surgeon came out and talked to you.

Today we saw him.  He was sitting up and was able to talk to us.  He seemed a bit out of it, but mostly coherent.

We’re still napping off our stress.  Sleep and Toppers Pizza.  We needed a treat after all that.

Monday:  Back to problems with my car.

I need a nap.
