Loscon 51 is Coming

Loscon 51 is Coming

Today we had a Zoom Loscon 51 Committee meeting.  We are about ten weeks away.  This will be our second year at the LAX Hilton.  Last year being the first, no one knew where anything was – and the place is laid out like a maze.  So, I’m calling this year’s blood drive, “The Blood Drive at the end of the Hallway”, with the tag line, “Despite all my days, I’m still just a rat in a maze”.  We are a go with the Red Cross and the Convention.

Kris and I are also running the Ice Cream Social, but there are still some details to work out with the hotel like ice cream bars or scoops.  And that will determine how much work we will have to do at the con.

And Kris will be in the Art Show AND The Maker’s Room where she’ll be teaching attendees how to do peyote beadwork stitches.  Not exactly a relax-a-con.

In other Loscon news, A Robotech group will be having some of its own programming there and bringing their own guests.

And Star Fleet Region 4  https://region4.org/  will be holding its conference at Loscon.

There will be more details on both of these events later.

If you are interested in attending or just want to check out Loscon, you can do so here  https://loscon.org/

We always have a great time, hope to see you there.

“What’s this?  A hamburger shaped-BattleBot?   Battle Royal with Cheese?  Too bad it went up against the burger flipper BattleBot. It didn’t stand a chance!

I’m a bit late to the game…this was from 2018, but I suppose I’m a BattleBot fan now.  Nothing like a little robot carnage with dinner.” – Vincent Reinhart

  1. Where is the social media conversation about the con taking place? I bought my tickets, made my hotel reservation, and I’m looking to connect and converse ahead of the con (first time attending, new to CA). Thanks for any tips/links you can provide!

Also, when should we expect the schedule/program book to be released?

(And thanks for posting something about the con. The Facebook page looks like it’s been dormant since March.)

    • Hi Arthur, so glad you can make it to Loscon! I’m Dennis’s wife and I can tell you you’ve come to the right place to ask questions. It’s been a love of ours for decades now and the experiences and friendships you’ll build there will last a lifetime.

I run the website, so if I don’t have an answer, I can usually find one out for you. I have the question as to when the program book/schedule will be available in to the Chair and Head of Programming. They usually get back to me pretty quickly, so it shouldn’t be too long before I know something.

As for tips, I am currently putting together an Attendee Guide and will be running it past our Chair at my next meeting with her, if not sooner.

You mentioned that it looked like the Facebook page has been dormant since March. Can I please get the url for that group so I can double-check it? There are several, and the one that is currently active is at https://www.facebook.com/Loscon .

Hope this all helps. I’ll get back to you when I know something about the programming grid going up. Stop by the Blood Drive sometime on Saturday so we can say Hi and meet in person!

  2. @Michelle: Indeed!

@Kristine: Thanks for the reply! Sorry I didn’t see it right away. I received the program in the recent email and my wife and I picked out the panels we’re interested in attending. I like the searchable web interface, but I think the categories could use some work. If you filter down to ‘Writing’ you won’t see the events marked ‘Literary’, ‘Workshop’ (which includes a ‘Writers Workshop’), or ‘Storytelling’.

On the Facebook thing, that is the site I was looking at. I clicked on ‘Posts’ and, at the time, there weren’t recent posts about the con. But maybe that’s the wrong way to look at it.

FYI: I wrote a blog post (see my website) about audio short stories by authors that are panelists at LOSCON 51. Might be of interest to others, so please share.
