‘Tis the Season
It’s the middle of July. You know what that means? Yes, it’s time for all the Halloween and Christmas decorations to come out. Forget about Labor Day, Let’s go straight to Halloween! Yes, there is some red, white and blue stuff out there, but it’s discounted and left over from the Fourth of July.
You can see what’s already at Costco, giant skeletons and nativity scenes. And right in between, you can see the “Nightmare Before Christmas” set. That’s the bridge between the two. Now, you might be wondering, where’s the Thanksgiving stuff? None at Costco. And except for a few tablecloths and paper turkeys, there isn’t any.
Thanksgiving is really just a dress rehearsal dinner for Christmas dinner. Think about it, pretty much the same traditional dinner of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and peas. Swap out pumpkin pie for fruit cake and that’s about it. You try out your new recipes for Thanksgiving and use what works for Christmas.
And it’s the alternate keep-the-peace-in-the-family meal for couples. We’ll spend Thanksgiving with your folks and Christmas with my folks.
Oh, and look what’s already at 7-11.
Halloween has become the biggest spending holiday of the year, with Christmas still being the first. It’s sort of like celebrating the Dark Side or the Light Side. I think it started decades ago when Hallmark started selling Christmas ornaments all year ‘round. It’s like what California says about the fire season – it’s all year long.
Australia celebrates Christmas in the summer, why shouldn’t we?
