Dennis and the Masters of the Universe
On June 1st, Kris and I attended a free screening of “Masters of the Universe.” How did we get free tickets, you ask? Well, a marketing company contacted a friend of ours in LASFS offering free tickets to a preview screening. Kris contacted the company and voila, free tickets! This is one of the occasional perks of joining LASFS – which you can do at https://lasfs.org/
The event was held at the Grove in Los Angeles. https://thegrovela.com/ For those of you not in the area, it’s a higher-end shopping center right next to Farmer’s Market. https://farmersmarketla.com/ Not a farmer’s market, THE FARMER’S MARKET. It’s a landmark here in L.A. If you ever watched “All in the Family” and remember the announcer at the beginning saying, “From Television City in Hollywood”, yeah, it’s right next door.
The theater was a huge mega-complex you could get lost in. They were also showing “The Mandalorian and Grogu” there.
I’ve been traveling a whole hero’s journey to find these. I gave up on McDonald’s carrying their version, the McGuffin.
Before the movie, I gave He-Man a few pointers on how to look tough.
I won’t post any spoilers, but I will say this was a fun, action-packed movie. I didn’t grow up with He-Man, but I was working in a toy store when the original cartoon and toys came out. I also watched the show occasionally on my days off, so I’m familiar with the characters and the lore of the universe. It was pretty true from what I remember, delving a lot deeper into Prince Adam’s early years than I remember. There is also quite a bit of humor in it as well. You might have gotten that from the trailers. Even Skeletor, the big baddy, has some funny lines. There was also a lot of character development I hadn’t seen before, not even on Netflix’s remake of the cartoon – which is worth watching. I’m particularly thinking of Man-At-Arms and Tilla. But again, I won’t give any spoilers.
I would have paid to see this if we didn’t get free tickets. My only complaint is that we don’t get to see a lot of Cringer/Battle Cat. But that is understandable considering how the story flows. But fear not, Cringer/Battle Cat fans. A pre-credit and two post-credit scenes hints at a sequel. It also hints at He-Man’s sister and the Court Wizard – again, trying to stay away from spoilers.
