What’s Out There?

I’ve been to a lot of conferences, mostly writing conferences.  But two media conferences are coming up.  Not specifically writing, but they will give me an opportunity to see how the film and television medias are changing.

The first is the city of Burbank’s 2025 Media Industry Expo and Job Fair.  https://www.cityofburbankjobfair.com/  The title is a little confusing.  If you read the description, it says it’s not really a job fair, but a chance to network with industry professionals.  Among some of the panels are subjects such as AI and the recent tax credits for keeping production local.  They also have workshops on building your resume, first steps/best steps in “breaking in”, and on art technology and business.  You can see their full schedule on their website.

The Expo is being held this Friday at Woodbury University in Burbank.  https://woodbury.edu/  No need to register and its FREE!  It’s from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and it’s closer to me than my church.

And speaking of my church, on Saturday August 9th, Calvary Bible Church  https://www.calvarybiblechurch.org/   is hosting the International Christian Film Festival.  https://eventcentral.net/e/9f413f3b-1923-4367-ade5-b3cea1e93ba9  If you read the description, it’s the International Christian Film and Music Festival, and this is it’s first stop on a national tour.  Taken from their “About US”:

Purpose-Focused Inspiration – Discover how to boldly use your God-given talent to impact the world, glorify HIM, and lead others to Christ. •. This isn’t just an event — it’s a divine appointment. A chance to sharpen your craft, grow your network, deepen your faith, and walk boldly in your calling.

This isn’t just about making Christian films, read this as Christian-friendly films or even family-friendly films and TV.  That’s were I’m from.  Whatever media I’m writing for and whatever genre, I’m a PG13 guy.  That’s part of my brand.  Sure, the good guys fight the bad guys, but I don’t believe in excessive violence, blood, guts and gore.  Nor overt sexual situations.  Nor vulgar language.

Whatever happened to the seven words you couldn’t say on the air?  Oh, right, cable TV is not on the public airwaves.  So, those channels only have to worry about what their sponsors will think.  Oh, but a lot of streaming service don’t even have sponsors on their premium packages, so they only have to worry about what their subscribers would think.

Sure, you could argue foul language would be realistic on some gritty, adult shows, but how about others?  I’m a big fan of the anime, “One Piece”, an outlandishly creative show whose core is loyalty and helping others.  Netflix did an outstanding job bringing this show into live action, but within this family-friendly show, they dropped a couple of F-bombs.  Why?  Did they really think that four or five F-bombs in an eight-episode series would get them more ratings?  Seriously?

But I rant.

The International Christian Film Festival is one day and it does cost $24.99 – which isn’t bad for a conference.  And I do have some ideas for some Christian stories after I finish my steampunk trilogy.

By the way, my pastor from Calvary Bible Church, Jay Underwood, is going to be one of the speakers.  He was an actor before he studied for the ministry and was in such films as, “The Boy Who Could Fly”, and “The Sonny and Cher Story.”

Look me up if you go to either of these events.

“I was going to do this review two weeks ago, but I gave up my space for Lief Garrett’s story.  It was truly inspiring.  Two weeks ago, Dennis experimented with a new casserole, Chicken Parmesan Pasta Bake.  https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=716354611208743&set=a.234796079364601

It was good, but a little bland.  I don’t think we will be having it again.  Not that there was anything wrong with it, it’s just that Dennis has so many other better recipes.  Although, I will admit, the grated parmesan does give it a nice crust.  And like some dishes, it tasted better the second time around.  Sort of like Hamburger Helper.  Ahh, the days of my youth.  You might find it worth a try.”  – Vincent Reinhart
