Off to Comic Con Revolution – But First…

Off to Comic Con Revolution – But First…

Last weekend was Conic Con Revolution in Ontario, CA.  This has become one of our three staple conventions of the year, with Kris getting free tickets for interviewing one of the founders, Drew Seldin.  You can hear the interview here   https://eventhorizon.scifi.radio/index.php?name=2026-03-27_eh293_comicconrevolution.mp3

Instead of leaving home Friday morning as we planned, we came up with a cunning plan:  Leave Thursday night.  The reasons being A) it’s cooler, B) less traffic, and C) we get all Friday up there in PERRIS! – California.  This worked out really well.  With a stop for dinner, it took us 2:50.  It would have been less than two hours if we’d driven straight through.

As our tradition, we stopped at Sonic in Pasadena.  It’s the only Sonic anywhere near us.

I had to have my double smash burger with cheese.

After that, we were on the road again arriving at Chateau Layton (my friend’s house) before 11:00 pm.

Friday we spent the morning with my friend Jessica.  I met her when we both worked at Toyville at the Stonewood Shopping Center about 40 years ago.  We’ve stayed in touch through fandom as we’re both SciFi fans and we both attend Gallifrey One and Loscon.  Then Kris and I spent the afternoon with our niece, Annie and her family.  We made Habanero Mango Chicken Chili together…

Using fresh habaneros I picked the day before off our two plants.

Through the kitchen window, we were admiring her garden.  She gave us a tour and we found out that she had a boysenberry bush.  Boysenberries are Kris’ favorite berry.  They are hard to find and no one grows them anymore because the fruit is so fragile.  Annie gave Kris some cuttings, which was the highlight of the entire trip for Kris.

We brought it home and planted it.  It’s still in a bit of shock, but we expect it to survive.

While we were having dinner, we got on the subject of cat cafes in Japan and how popular they are.  Turns out the is a cat café in Redlands, which is about 20 minutes from where Annie lives.

They took us down there and bought us ice cream from a liquid nitrogen ice cream shop.

They pour liquid nitrogen into a metal bowl then add milk and flavorings right in front of you.  If you’ve been to Loscon, you’ve seen this done at the ice cream social.

Then we went next door to the Cat Café.  We spent half an hour with all the cats and books.

Here is the guardian of the café.

They are also a book store and have a lot of interesting signs.

And we got to play with the cats.

As we were leaving, I saw this sign in the window.

It reminds me of what the Matt Smith Doctor Who once said, “We are all stories in the end, make it a good one.”
