Oktoberfest
Yet another foodie adventure. This time, beer, brauts and pretzels. Well, no beer (I don’t drink) and I didn’t have room left for big, soft, tasty pretzels. There were several Oktoberfests around us. In Chatsworth, Simi Valley and in Ventura County. We chose to go to the one at the Ventura County Fair Grounds. We’ve been to that venue before for Taste of Japan and the California Strawberry Festival. It’s a smaller venue that the LA County Fair Grounds, so it’s not as overwhelming, yet it’s big enough for all the activities you want.
And unlike the other two, senior citizen discounts! Yeah, I’m old!
There was food everywhere. This was one of the first booths we encountered and it was the biggest. After making the first go around, we came back here for their mac and cheese.
I had the hot wings mac and cheese.
And Kris had the hot dog mac and cheese.
I don’t know how German mac and cheese is, but I love mac and cheese and this one was good. I had come with the intention of having a bratwurst.
But after the mac and cheese, I didn’t have the room. This was one instance where not being in the habit of eating lunch worked against me. And there was a lot to choose from.
Nothing says Germany like handmade tortillas.
But there were other German fare, like Octoberfest Pizza(?) There was a line for this one.
We had the apple strudel after giving the mac and cheese a chance to settle.
They also had this train ride.
The first half of the ride went through the main part of the fairgrounds with the engineer pointing out the various vendors. But the last half just went round the back of the buildings.
There were plenty of people at the Oktoberfest, but not the crowd I was expecting. Certainly less people for its size than Taste of Japan. But I can’t say I was surprised. Between the San Fernando Valley, Simi, and Ventura there were three Oktoberfests. Who knows what else was going on in the rest of LA. And on that same weekend there was an Italianfest, a Greekfest, Steampunk at the Strathearn (which I will cover next week) and the Pacific Air Show down in Huntington Beach. I think there were just way too many events going on in the same weekend.
Next year, I hope they split things up. I would have liked to have gone to the air show.
