Kristine Cherry: The Voyage Home
Yesterday, Kris finally came home from the hospital.
Yes, I did spend several days visiting her. She was in the hospital from last Saturday night at 11:00pm to yesterday (Saturday) at 11:00 am. Just twelve hours short of a whole week.
When last we met, on Monday, Kris we going to see if she did need surgery. Well, the CT scan shows she did. A foot and a half of her small intestine had slipped through her hernia and got strangulated. They caught it in time, that section of the intestine was okay and they stuffed it back into place. Then they put in a mesh and sewed up the hernia.
Two surgeons originally wanted her to lose weight first so the surgery would have a better success of being permanent. This is her third time of repairing this hernia. But this was an emergency, so they went ahead and fixed it.
She was in horrible pain when she woke up from surgery and it took all morning to get the pain under control. The surgeon later explained that the muscles had been open for at least a decade and sewing them back into position caused a great strain on them which caused the pain.
For a couple of days, she was on a liquid diet. Then they moved her to solid food to make sure everything was working again, but she didn’t have much of an appetite. The last thing she needed was to have a bowel movement before she could come home. This took a few days, which is why she didn’t come home until Yesterday.
From past surgeries, we knew she wouldn’t be able to lay flat on her back, so we rented a recliner for her to sleep in the living room. I’ll be spending a few days home from work to take care of her. As for pain management, all she needs now is Tylenol as needed.
We hope this will be a quick recovery.
Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.

“Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” Kris requested these as I left to pick her up.
