Predators, sheezzz!
Kris and I often go for walks around our apartment. And when we do, we like to say “hi” to our Guardians of the garden. These are the predators that protect our plants – while having breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Kris’ favorite is, of course, the dragonflies. They usually stick close to ponds and creeks, anywhere that has some still water where they can lay their eggs. I don’t know where there is any still water around us, but there is often three of them buzzing around our pool area. Kris managed to catch this one at rest, which isn’t very often.
They can eat 100 mosquitoes a day, so they are very welcome here. Even their larva eats mosquito larva. And the have a kill rate of 98%.
On our rounds, we would often see this girl.
Each night she would spin a new web. Spiders catch all sorts of pests.
We haven’t seen her for a while. We hope she’s moved as opposed to moved on.
My favorite is these guys, the praying mantis.
He was a recent find on one of our walks. If I had a spirit animal, this would be it. They are the only insect that can look over its shoulder. When caught in a spider web, they have been known to eat the spider. How bad bug is that? And they pray. Well, I pray, too.
We also have other bugs like crickets and scarabs. They’re not predators, but we like them, too.

So, this is a learning center you take your kids to when they need help with their school work. You think maybe they could have used a smiley face in the logo? If I was a kid being dragged here by my parents, I would think, “Well, this is going to be a lot of no fun.”
