They Grow Up So Fast

They Grow Up So Fast

It seems like only a year ago that our Habanero plants, Gumball and Darwin, were just little sprouts we hat to support with stalks.  Oh, wait, it was a year ago, July of last year, to be precise.

Even back then they looked like happy plants.  Now they are wildly happy plants taller than me!

Darwin is the one in front.  And now, about a year and a half after we planted them, they are producing fruit.  Six are ripening at the moment, with a lot more to come.

And when these guys decide to pop, they pop FAST.  The largest one we have we call the pumpkin.  Here it is on Friday.

And here it is on Saturday morning at 7:30 am.

And here it is again on Saturday afternoon and 7:30 pm.

It will take a few days longer to ripen fully to an orange color.

But wait, there’s more.  Both plants aren’t finished flowering.  One branch alone has four clusters of flowers.  Here’s the one at the end.

I found a trick on YouTube to getting the most fruit.  In leu of letting bees into you house, you have to be a pollinator.  You take your finger and rub the inside of a flower, then you move onto the next flower and the next.  As you can see, this trick works pretty well.  We had one plant that produced 98 habaneros in a season.

I see a lot of habanero chicken chili, habanero beef chili, habanero meatloaf and habanero nachos in my future.
