Vincent Steps Out

It was time for the 39^th annual “L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Dinner”.  I had heard much of this event, and this year Dennis invited me to be his guest along with Kris.  The decorations of the Taglyan Complex were extraordinary, the centerpiece being the dragon over the stage.

From what I’m told, the decorations are always inspired by the cover of that year’s story collection.

The Asian dancers that started the festivities were also impressive.  Dennis and Kris spent a most enjoyable evening conversing with many of Dennis’ GLAWS colleagues.

I, of course was interested in the meal.  The food part of the event actually started outside with h’orderves.

Oh, no!  No!  No!  The dragon outside was very friendly.

The h’oderves included fillet mingnon, crab cakes and other delicacies.  The dinner, itself, started with a walnut salad.  The walnuts were delicately seasoned and paired well with the sweet/tartness of the granny smith apple slices.

The main course was an exquisite “Turf and Surf” combination of salmon and fillet mingnon with vegetable spears. 

Desert was an ice cream rondeau with a chocolate coating, most delightful!

The ceremonies included twenty winners of this year’s contest and one from last year who couldn’t make it to that dinner.  Overall, a lovely black-tie evening and a splendid way to start the weekend.

“Yesterday was also an on-site meeting of the Loscon 49 Committee.  The Marriott always provides our meetings with refreshments.  Since Kris couldn’t make it, I was planning on a bag of chips and maybe a cookie for Kris.  But instead, the hotel provided this layout for us with pastries, cookies, veggies, crisp breads and cheeses.  It was quite a nifty treat!  Quite a fair far beyond what we usually get.  It was all that and a bag of chips – except they didn’t have any chips this time – you know what I mean.” – Dennis

“Nifty”, yes.  “All that and a bag of…”  Thank you, Dennis.  Now that I’m done with Writers of the Future, I’ll go back to handling the food critiquing. – Vincent
