THE ORDINARY WORLD

As promised, here is a review of last week’s Gallifrey One 33 1/3, Long Live the Revolution.  As Sci Fi nerds, we have to escape the ordinary world every once in a while.  Our favorite fan get away is Gallifrey One.  Far too much for a full review, but here are some highlights.

CALL TO ADVENTURE

No refusal of the call here.  Our Friday started with Kris setting up in the art show.  She had a variety of Dr. Who-related pen wraps and bracelets.  You can also find her work in her Etsy store at T is For Tardis https://www.etsy.com/shop/TisforTardis .

MEETING WITH THE MENTORS

As always, there was a myriad of writers for the show, books and the Big Finish audio adventures.  These are my mentors.  The big-name guest they had was Chris Chibnall, the show runner for the last three years of Dr. Who, the Jodie Whittaker years.  Here he is the fourth person from the left.  This was a panel on the Evolution of Writing for Television.   They covered everything from how the first TV scripts were adaptations of radio plays to how things are changing again with streaming services.

Chris Chibnall also mentioned that he introduced the concept of the writer’s room to Dr. Who and the BBC in general.  Up until then, there were no writer’s rooms at the BBC, which has been the standard in US television for decades.  So, while the US streaming services are morphing into the British model, the BBC is morphing into the American model.

CROSSING THE FIRST THRESHOLD

You can’t go into the con without entering the lobby and seeing all the costumes.  Here are just a few.

TESTS, ALLIES AND ENEMIES

Waiting in long lines for autographs can test your patience.  One of the best parts of going to a con is catching up with friends.  Here is a bunch of us having lunch/dinner (luner?) at Hanger 18 in the hotel.

APPROACHING THE INMOST CAVE

I guess that would be Program Room A, where all the big-named guests are on stage.  This year we had the current Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.  Also, the first female Doctor, for those of you that don’t follow the show.  She was later joined be two companions from the classic Dr. Who who were also in her final episode, “The Power of the Doctor”.  That’s Janet Fielding (Tegan) on the left and Sophie Aldred (Ace) on the right.

THE ORDEAL

If you sit on those hotel chairs for a couple of hours, your butt will know what the ordeal is.

REWARD

Aside from the fannish stuff, our favorite food truck was there again.   Baby’s Bad Ass Burgers!  Kris and I both had the She’s Smokin’ BBQ burger with bacon and we shared an order of chili fries.  We sometimes follow the trucks around town and you can too at this website.  https://www.babysbadassburgers.com/  And you can’t go through the dealer’s room without buying some Girl Scout Cookies.

And Mountain Dew is the preferred beverage of Time Ponies.

THE ROAD BACK

That’s the 405 back to Mundainia.  We don’t talk about Mundainia.

RETURN WITH THE ELIXER

By the end of Sunday, Kris had sold five of her pieces in the Art Show.  Guess what we’re buying next year’s tickets with.
