Busy Saturday

Busy Saturday

It started with a Men’s Breakfast at my church, Calvary Bible Church in Burbank.  I’m on kitchen staff, so I got up at 4:20 am to be there at 6:00 am.  We’re famous for our breakfast burritos and I’m the egg man.  I scrambled over 150 eggs that morning.  It was also our first No Mask Required meeting.  It was great to actually see people smile and shake hands again.  The sermon topic was discipleship.

After cleanup and a half-hour nap, My wife and I went down to the LAX Marriott for our first onsite Loscon  http://loscon.org/47/  meeting.  We are the department heads of the blood drive, so we were there to discuss our and the American Red Cross’ needs.  The convention is expected to be smaller than usual, having been canceled last year due to the Covid shut down.  It’s hard to say what our final attendance will be, but the Chairman expects it to be about a third of usual attendance, which puts it at about 400.

In past years, this would have greatly affected the blood drive.  But now that the American Red Cross puts all its drives online, we got a fair number of people coming to donate that are not part of the convention last year.  https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive?cid=brand&med=cpc&source=google&scode=RSG00000E017&gclid=CjwKCAjww-CGBhALEiwAQzWxOlCdTivZWjS7yokEzto_5HfZz7x88qPlkqIeAazdv30dOmyrZ-v35BoCwMcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Because of the smaller attendance, our budget will be smaller, but we will still have enough for one cash prize and a membership to next year’s convention to give away.

We are also the Fan Guests of Honor.  We were given this honor because we’ve hosted the blood drive for thirty years, hence the name of this year’s drive, “Thirty Years of Blood Drives with the Fan Guests of Honor.  We also learned that we will have our own “Get to Know the Fan Guests of Honor” panel, and we may be included on some other panels.

After some breakout time, we concluded the meeting.  It was about 3:45 pm.  Kris and I planned to then go to Dark Delicacies in Burbank for Brandy June’s first book signing for her first book, “Gold Spun”.  https://camcatbooks.com/Books/G/Gold-Spun2  But with the traffic on the 405, I knew I couldn’t make it before her signing would be over.  I’ll have to catch her on her next signing.
